Perinatal physiotherapy

Perinatal physiotherapy

Pre- and postnatal physiotherapy

Perinatal physiotherapy is intended for pregnant women, to support pregnancy and prepare the body for childbirth and for young people who have given birth, for their postnatal, perineal-abdominal rehabilitation; achievable even a few years after birth if it is still necessary.

During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes hormonal and physical changes that can cause pain and discomfort. As the baby grows, the biomechanics of our bodies change. This change can disrupt muscular balance, causing pain in the connective tissue.

Childbirth, although one of the most beautiful things in a woman’s life, represents an enormous ordeal on the female body.

Suddenly the baby is no longer in the womb, but the body cannot cope with these changes so quickly.

It is important to support the future mother to fully experience her pregnancy and to prepare for childbirth and recovery.

Perinatal physiotherapy can help you achieve this goal.

Prepartum physiotherapy

During prenatal sessions, we will help relieve pain and discomfort related to pregnancy (sciatica, lower back pain, back pain, pubic symphysis pain, constipation, shortness of breath, reflux, heavy legs) through prenatal massages, stretching, postures, adapted exercises, advice on daily life to better cope with your pregnancy.

Thanks to our educational help, the mother-to-be can discover the anatomy of the perineum and the function of the perineal muscles and understand the importance of this little-known area in maintaining continence, organ support and posture to reduce problems of the perineal sphere (urinary leaks, dyspareunia).

Studies show that physical activity during pregnancy has many benefits for the mother and fetus, as well as childbirth. We can also help you continue or start a physical activity adapted to your pregnancy.

Postpartum physiotherapy

Rest is one of the most important and essential elements of postnatal rehabilitation. All the rest and personalized rehabilitation adapted to the postnatal situation of a young mother can protect and condition health for years to come.

In postnatal rehabilitation we target not only the perineum but also the muscles of the abdominal region to regain or improve the natural stability of your body to protect your back from back pain or sciatica, your abdomen from diastasis and your perineum from urinary leakage and prolapse.

It is essential that the abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor muscles are strengthened and work together. We offer you adapted exercises to help you integrate your perineum and abdominals into your daily activities.

During the first appointment (5-6 weeks after delivery) we carry out a detailed assessment which includes taking a medical history, observing breathing, palpating the abdomen, observing any scars. (caesarean section or episiotomy/rupture) and finally examination of the perineum. Depending on the assessment results and your goals, we can choose the most appropriate treatment to achieve the best progress.

There are different methods of perineal rehabilitation: manual rehabilitation, electrostimulation, biofeedback rehabilitation with probe, postural and respiratory rehabilitation, diaphragm treatment, scar work, strengthening of the abdominal strap, etc.
