Perineal rehabilitation

Pelvic floor physiotherapy in Le Grand-Saconnex

What is pelvic floor rehabilitation?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is a comprehensive approach focused on retraining the pelvic floor muscles. It may be appropriate at different stages of a woman’s life, particularly after pregnancy or around menopause. It can also form part of preventive care.

At Physio Santé Fit in Le Grand-Saconnex, our physiotherapist specialising in pelvic floor rehabilitation provides care tailored to your symptoms, daily life and goals.

What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is often compared to a hammock because of its shape. It consists of muscles, ligaments and tissues at the base of the pelvis, extending from the pubic bone at the front to the coccyx at the back.

It plays an important role in supporting the pelvic organs — the bladder, uterus and rectum — as well as maintaining continence and supporting sexual function. It also contributes to the stability of the back, pelvis and hips.

A pelvic floor that is weakened, overstretched or overly tense may be associated with various difficulties, including urinary or faecal leakage, urinary urgency, pelvic organ prolapse or perineal pain.

Many factors can influence pelvic floor function. Pregnancy and childbirth, hormonal changes around menopause, excess weight, repeated heavy lifting and certain physical activities may contribute to symptoms.

When should you consult a pelvic floor physiotherapist?

What does pelvic floor rehabilitation involve?

During your first session, we take the time to understand your symptoms, difficulties and goals. We discuss your medical history and daily habits, then carry out an assessment tailored to your situation.

At our physiotherapy practice in Le Grand-Saconnex, we work with you to develop a personalised pelvic floor rehabilitation programme. Depending on your needs, this may include:

Exercises to improve awareness of your pelvic floor;

Training to improve contraction, relaxation and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles;

Exercises combining pelvic floor activity, breathing and abdominal muscle coordination;

Advice on adapting your habits and everyday movements;

Progressive exercises to support your return to physical activity and sport.

We do not provide electrical stimulation or biofeedback.

We explain each exercise so that you can practise it with confidence. We regularly review your progress to adapt your programme and help you regain greater comfort and independence in everyday life.
