Back pain: physiotherapy in Le Grand-Saconnex
The back
The back consists of the spine, the ribs in the thoracic region and the surrounding soft tissues. The spine includes the vertebrae, intervertebral discs and spinal joints. Joint capsules, ligaments, tendons, fascia, muscles and nerves also contribute to its function. Together, these structures provide stability, allow movement and distribute loads.
Back pain is common. It often affects the lumbar region, or lower back, but can also affect the upper back. Pain often improves within a few days or weeks, although it can sometimes persist or recur.
When pain is severe, persists or restricts your activities, an assessment helps evaluate your situation and guide treatment. Sometimes, pain felt in the back originates from another area of the body.
Symptoms of back conditions
Back pain may begin as mild discomfort accompanied by lower back stiffness. Symptoms vary according to the situation and may include:

- Tingling or pins and needles in the buttock, leg or foot ;
- Lower back stiffness ;

Causes of back conditions
Most lower back pain is described as “non-specific”: it cannot be confidently attributed to a particular disease or injury. This does not mean that the pain is not physical or real.
Several factors can contribute to back pain, including a lack of movement, repeated physical strain, prolonged positions or stress. Other conditions require specific care.
