Lymphatic drainage in Le Grand-Saconnex
About lymphatic drainage
The lymphatic system helps maintain fluid balance in the tissues and supports the immune system. When lymphatic circulation is disrupted, fluid can accumulate and cause swelling, particularly in an arm or leg. This is known as lymphoedema.
At Physio Santé Fit in Le Grand-Saconnex, manual lymphatic drainage aims to encourage lymph flow, reduce swelling and improve your comfort. It forms part of a treatment plan tailored to the cause of your oedema and your individual situation.
Symptoms of oedema
- Tight or shiny skin ;
- A feeling of pressure or heaviness ;
- Persistent marks on the skin, such as those left by socks ;
- Swelling of the ankles, feet, arms or legs ;
- Slower wound healing ;
- Difficulty moving or walking.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage is most often combined with appropriate exercises to complement treatment. We also provide advice and explanations to help you support lymphatic circulation in everyday life, including at home.
This specific technique aims to encourage lymph flow. Depending on your situation, your physiotherapist begins by preparing the areas towards which the lymph will be directed, then gradually works along the lymphatic pathways and swollen areas.
The movements are slow and rhythmic. Pressure is gentle, adapted to your sensitivity and normally painless.
When can it help?
- Lymphoedema following surgery involving the removal of lymph nodes; ;
- Lymphoedema related to cancer or its treatment ;
- Oedema following surgery, particularly hip or knee surgery ;
- Oedema following an injury or trauma.
